Get Hip - Go Green Fest ’09
In celebration of Earth Day, Los Angeles County Supervisors Gloria Molina and Mark Ridley-Thomas join the Los Angeles County Departments of Public Works and Parks and Recreation in promoting energy conservation and a cleaner and greener community.
“We are joining other events throughout the nation in celebration of Earth day by bringing together families, children, community leaders and local residents to generate awareness of resources tohelp keep the earth clean and green,” said Molina and Ridley-Thomas.
March for Water 2009
Mujeres de la Tierra was an active partner in the 2009 March for Water, supplying vegetables and fruit from a generous donation from ReadyPac.
The bottle free event was inspired by marches held in various parts of the world in support of the human right to water. Participants marched the 3-mile route from Los Angeles State Historic Park to El Rio de Los Angeles State Park.
Environmental Day at South El Monte High School

South El Monte High School and the National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) are both committed to helping build the next generation of environmental stewards and leaders. On May 8th they hosted the first annual Environmental Career Day.
The event feature exhibits by Los Angeles area environmental agencies (federal, state, city and county) as well as local green groups, corporations, as well as Mujeres de la Tierra.
Students followed their normal school day, with one period following another. However, during each period there were classroom presentations by volunteer “role models” who assisted teachers in discussing environmental issues and related careers. Elected officials and other key community leaders from across the district also be attend the the successful event.
ThinkRiver! Azusa 2009
Think River! Azusa, held Saturday April 18, 2009 at the Azusa River Wilderness Park was a huge success! There were 151 volunteers who participated in our river clean-up, ranging in age from 3 to 74. Over 700 pounds of trash was collected along the San Gabriel River bike trail, consisting of such items as plastics, paper, broken glass, tires, plywood scraps, one mattress, and numerous cigarette butts. Each volunteer was given a pedometer by the Azusa Wellness Center and encouraged to measure the number of steps taken while walking along the river trail. Total number of steps taken by all volunteers = 766,074 and average number of steps taken per person = 7,817, proof that Azusa Walks!
Think River! Azusa 2009 had a record number of sponsors and partners who helped make the event successful. Rain Bird, Mujeres de la Tierra, Azusa Wellness Center, Azusa Beautiful, and Azusa City Library Book Mobile hosted educational stations to help educate the volunteers on a living and sustaining a healthy environment.
